I’ve become quite interested in the Strava debate since learning about recent events in San Francisco. Are people really so influenced by apps, to the point where they’ll engage in risky behaviour? The latest tweets using the #strava hashtag might offer some insight into how people are engaging with Strava. What do YOU think? Is [...]

Strava as a scapegoat for reckless cyclist behaviour

Within hours of posting my Strava article, a section of it had been copied into a post on a San Francisco community blog, in this article. The post concerns a tragic incident in which a pedestrian was killed by a cyclist, and highlights an ongoing debate as to whether sites like Strava are a contributing [...]

strava

If I asked you to think of the connection between gaming and keeping in shape, you’d probably mention various fitness and dance games on xbox, playstation and wii. The popularity of these games has made exercising accessible to many who perhaps wouldn’t engage with more traditional forms. Aspects of gaming culture are being incorporated into [...]

Hill Climb Hell

My bike stands upright at the start line, held in the vice-like grip of a marshal, cold and inanimate; a dead machine. Ten seconds… the flesh and blood perched on top listens intently, and prepares mentally for the effort about to be exerted. Three, two, one…  an explosive start to get up to speed quickly [...]

What lasts 6 minutes and leaves you in a sweaty heap, gasping for breath and with your heart trying to leap out of your chest? Of course, it’s the Rhuallt Hill Climb. Essentially, it’s a very long hill which you must attempt to get yourself up as fast as you possibly can. On your bike, [...]

March stats 2012

Who would have thought that we’d have a mini heatwave at the end of March? Nobody’s complaining, least of all those of us who rode the Cheshire Cat with a perfect blue sky. See the Movie here! Using a Garmin to track all my rides makes this stuff so easy – here are my stats [...]

It was worth looking like a complete twonk with a camera strapped to my helmet to get this footage. I’ve had many kind comments already about the Mow Cop footage (edited down in this version of the film) from people who rode the event, saying how nice it is to be able to relive moments from the [...]

I signed up for the Cheshire Cat back in about November last year,  to provide motivation to maintain a training plan throughout the winter. It worked! Having participated in the disastrous Etape Cymru in October 2011, and having just today ridden the long version of the 2012 Cheshire Cat route, I can safely say that [...]

I’ve posted previously about the difficulties with using OS Discoverer maps at high zoom levels, because of the pixellation that occurs beyond a certain zoom level. If this bothers you, but you don’t want to use open StreetMap maps (OSM), the City Navigator map may be just what you’re looking for.
