Here’s a tool that lets you download tcx data from your Strava segments, to race against using your Garmin Edge’s virtual partner/virtual racer.
Ok, there are a few tools out there to extract data from Strava, but the attraction with this one is that it produces 3 files for you, based on the timings of:
- Your own PB
- The current KOM
- The person who is just above you on the leaderboard.
The author calls this person “the carrot“.
If you’re new to using a Garmin Edge to race against against Strava data, read this guide.
I like the idea of chasing carrots, and this seems like a quick and easy way to harvest the dataset without having to do any manual searching through segments, and looking for the individual KOM efforts or the “carrot” rides.
If and when you actually beat the carrot, re-run the process to download the next quickest carrot! Some carrots might take a while to chew through, but it’ll be satisfying getting closer and closer each time.
Here’s what to do:
Go to http://joe.emenaker.com/StravaTool/
Insert your Strava ID
-visit your own profile and look at the address bar.
It’ll say http://app.strava.com/athletes/[your number]
Wait a while. Then you’ll see your segments on a list like this:
Tick the ones you want, and enter your email address.
Now, it gave me an internal server error when I hit the submit button, but 20 minutes later the email did come through!
The zip file contained instructions and of course, the TCX files.
Notice the KOM’s are prefixed KOM_, and PR’s are PR_.
The CT_ indicates the “Carrot” data.
Go get ’em!
After selecting segment I only receive ‘Internal Server Error’
I did too, but then a little later (20 mins or so) the email showed up :-)
Thx for letting me know Alan, found them in the SPAM folder in my mail client know.
Hi Alan, love the site. When I try this it just gives me a blank page after I enter my athlete ID (on both IE and Chrome). Is it anything to do with Strava restricting use of their API do you think?
I get the blank page as well.
Tried to email the Joe but no reply. Guess its dead now.
Blank page for me too
You can use bennigs tool http://gniza.org/segments/ on this you have authorise Strava access, then just put in the strava segment Number ID and then you can create a segment based on the KOM or your PB group etc, and save the fit file in the NewFiles directory on Edge510,810 & 1000
Thanks Luis, I’ve been meaning to write a blog post about that tool. Am I right in thinking it’s just for segments, not for whole rides?
