According to Wikipedia, the comfort zone is a “behavioural state within which a person operates in an anxiety-neutral condition, using a limited set of behaviours to deliver a steady level of performance, usually without a sense of risk”. We all have comfort zones in relation to most areas of our lives. When I was approaching 40, I felt an urge to get fit again. I was riding solo for a whole year before I thought about joining my local club. If you’re still at the stage where you’re thinking about whether to get involved or not, here’s some good reasons to dive in.

Eureka cafe

It’s been a whole year since I first made contact with my local cycling club (Rhyl) by joining them for their annual New Year’s Day time trial. I dabbled with a few more time trials but to be honest I’m still skeptical enough to not be interested in spending loads of money on a ridiculous [...]

club run

This video took about as long to edit as the ride itself (about 5 hours). However, a few of the guys had not been up that way before and it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say they were blown away by the route.  One of the chaps even proclaimed it to be one of the [...]

What a fantastic club ride out over the moors. I shot some video footage using the GoPro Hero2 clamped to my bar, and from it extracted some stills. Here they are! I’ll upload the video when it’s ready. It’s taking about as long to edit as the ride actually took…

I’ve been volunteered to lead a route this week and here is my proposal. There is some stunning scenery along this route, and some hefty bits of climbing too. Bring a banana, or something.

Rest and be thankful

Sunday club runs have rapidly become the highlight of the week for me. There’s an almost  meditative, psychologically therapeutic quality about spending a good few hours on the bike. It’s certainly not just a physical thing. Anyway, before I get all heavy (man), here’s the route we did today.

I got to the meeting place with five minutes to spare. Two other riders were already there, all geared up and ready to go. As we chatted, a stream of people arrived, most by bike and some by car; all greeted warmly. It felt like a family. Not the regular sort of mildy dysfunctional family [...]

It’s usually nice to do something slightly physical on New Years Day isn’t it? After the excesses of Christmas, it’s refreshing to ‘blow the cobwebs away’ and start the year on a positive. I’ve wanted to get involved with a cycling club for a while now, and have lurked around the facebook pages of two [...]
