Strava Flybys not loading?

Last Modified: September 25, 2017

Are your Strava Flyby links not visible, and you’re wondering where they’ve gone? My flyby links were not loading, and here’s the simple fix!

During a weekend ride I passed a few riders I didn’t recognise. I thought it would be interesting to use Strava Flybys to see if it was anyone I knew.

I noticed that when I was looking at my friends’ rides on Strava, I could see the Flybys link, but strangely when I looked at my own Strava rides, the Flyby link was missing. My Strava flybys had somehow been turned off!

How to view your Strava flybys if you can’t see the link.

Thankfully, flybys are not only for Strava premium users, so that isn’t the issue.

If your Strava activities are not showing you the link to your flybys, it’s all down to your privacy settings.

At some point in the past I must have locked down my security settings, probably after writing articles like these:

There’s a specific tick box in relation to privacy of flybys, which affects whether your rides will show up at all within the flyby data.

So if you choose to opt out (to be invisible to others on flybys) then this also means that you can’t see your own flyby.

Here’s how to make sure your Strava privacy settings will allow you to see your flybys.

In Strava, click on your account, then on Settings, then on Privacy.

Account > Settings > Privacy

Thinking about it, there should be an option to still see your own ride, with flyby data from other people who have opted in. But it’s appears to be the case that if you want to not appear on flybys, then you also forgo the ability to view your own rides as flybys, which is a shame.

Perhaps it’s part of Strava’s strategy to encourage everyone to be open and to share their data.

Anyway, Strava flybys are fascinating to watch, so if you’ve been frustrated by failing flybys, now you know how to bring them back!

Cant tell when this article was written but Flybys still done turn up even after setting correct privacy settings. Maybe its a subscription feature now? Any idea otherwise why it still doesnt show up?
