The first Scarletfire webinar, featuring Ben from Veloviewer, was a great success. If you missed it, I’ve made the recording available. Hurrah!
Veloviewer tips and tricks
To make the content more digestible, I’ve painstakingly chopped the 90 minute webinar up for you into distinct little chunks.
Part 1: Introduction and background.
In this first portion of the show, I provide a little bit of background and history to the development of Veloviewer, before Ben tells us exactly where he got the inspiration and the inclination to build something new.
Believe it or not, we have a Windows phone to thank, and a jacuzzi!
Part 2: Pacing on climbs and TT’s
In this second part of the webinar, Ben provides his detailed insights about how to use Veloviewer to pace yourself better on climbs and TT’s.
Part 3: How to include your Veloviewer Score
In this video, Ben shares top tips for improving your Veloviewer score. How to identify segments where you stand the biggest chance of making large improvements.
Part 4: Age segmenting and Strava API.
In this part, Ben responds to a reader question about age segmentation and explains the data that’s available to him via the Strava API, and how this is somewhat dependent on whether the user is a Strava premium customer.
Part 5: Efforts, and gear filtering
In this video, Ben describes the new Efforts tab within Veloviewer, and demonstrates the range of filtering and visualisation of your Strava data, that can be achieved.
He also demonstrates how to simply filter your rides depending on which bike you used.
Part 6: Commutes, and Zwift
Ben offers his view of Zwift, and comments on the potential for contamination of the Strava leaderboards – not so much from Zwift, but from other virtual ride products which don’t identify themselves as being so.
Also, responding to a reader question about commuting, and how to analyse or filter out these rides.
Part 7: Coaching and Training
How can we use Veloviewer to help with our training?
Ben hints at a future development to integrate real life coaches within Veloviewer, so in future you may be able to access additional professional advice direct from within Veloviewer!
Part 8: GPS hardware, Eddington scores etc
In this section, Ben and I chatted about hardware developments and the exciting move towards more widgetized, open source platforms.
Ben also covered the Eddington score function within Veloviewer.
What’s your Eddington score?
Part 9: Using Stravistix to access Veloviewer from Strava.
How can you access Veloviewer from within the Strava website?
A third party chrome add-on called Stravistix will let you do this (and a lot more!)
Part 10: Establishing gradients within segments.
In this section, Ben gives us his top tips on how to adjust the views of an individual segment to show the detail of how the gradient varies over the course of the segment.
Includes some amazing visualisations and tricks to get a better view.
Part 11: The future of Veloviewer.
What next for Veloviewer? Ben shares his ideas of how he is going to develop the site over the coming months and years.
Lots of exciting stuff to look forward to.
Part 12: Final questions, and farewell
The final part of the webinar with Ben, in which we mop up any questions from the text box.
I conclude by thanking Ben for his time and expertise, and urge people to consider supporting the development of Veloviewer by becoming a Pro member. For only £9.99 per YEAR, it’s phenomenal value for money.
Long may Ben continue to develop this wonderful resource.
